Science Inquiry
Science Inquiry basics (Students have a copy of this in a checklist format):
I know I am ready for my presentation because I can:
- Describe and interpret movement of objects in the sky relative to my topic, and identify patterns and order in these movements.
- Explain the relative size and importance of my topic in our solar system and the known universe, and teach others about it.
- Show clear understanding of the emission of light versus the reflection of light.
I have included the following things in my presentation:
- Information that shows my understanding of movement and organization of the sky in relation to my topic.
- A clear explanation of the scientific (fact based) significance of my topic in our universe, big or small.
- Research and planning Notes/Log that show various styles of collecting data (lists, jot notes, diagrams, insights/ideas, vocab lists, project draft or ‘mock-up’, group work calendar with allocated tasks and check in dates).
- At least three different specific resources and named them in notes.
- A hands on activity or model for at least 6 peers (supplies included).
- A well edited, practiced and organized presentation that I am proud of.
Homework Reminders and Reassurances
Science - Keep working on your Sky Inquiries. Presentations will be from Feb 25-28. Keep it simple, and have fun with this!
Don't forget your 'date with the moon' if you have one over the weekend.
Math- Students have received several Math sheets to try them over the long weekend. If your kiddoes are telling you they don't have to do them, they are telling the truth! The ones that are on LCM and converting fractions to decimals are expected to be completed, as these are mostly review. We will go over them together on Wednesday. We have moved on to ratio and percent.
The others are just really good practice, but only if the timing fits into your family's schedule. Some families want extra practice, so I thought I would add some extras in. There are two pages that have multiplication and division practice questions (one is grade level, the other is more challenging). Never work to the point of tears. Struggle, yes, but stop after it feels like it's too much. 20 or 30 minutes is enough at a time.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Week of Feb 3-7, 2020
Humanities:
- Students worked on reading and writing poetry this week. They will be incorporating their work on enhancing vocabulary to create imagery in their 'I Am Sky' themed poetry.
- Literary devices (metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, alliteration, hyperbole)
Math:
- We are learning to use our fraction work to understand ratios
- Two Math worksheets are on their way home on Ratios. We will review these together on Monday and Tuesday.
- Try watching the MathAntics videos to review fractions, decimals and ratios.
Science:
- The Sky Inquiries have begun! Almost all students have completed their proposals and started their personal inquiry project. These are based on their carefully formulated question. Students are to become experts on their predetermined topic, and create a game, model or hands on experiment for their classmates. Checklist/criteria will be handed out on Monday, and students will have four more class periods (two doubles and two singles) to plan, collaborate, research and, create. This is enough time to do a great job, depending on approach and focus. Those students who committed to working in a group may want to plan a time outside school to connect with their group over the next two weeks. Alternatively, sharing group work on Drive, and planning/coordinating to work on specific part of a shared task will avoid missing deadlines once you sign up for your presentation date.
- Students have been adding to their lunar calendar by recording the moon each night this month, as a classmate presents their artwork. We are now half way through, which means... what moon are we on this weekend???
Students, please share the assignment with your parents, have fun with this!
